Excavation
Nelson excavates the contaminated soil through the use of heavy machinery and transports it to the material handling site.
Material Handling
The contaminated soil is screened for oversized debris before being deposited into the feed hopper.
Material Handling
The material is moved at a controlled rate onto a conveyor weigh belt. Nelson charges clients by the tonne of processed material.
Thermal Desorption Unit
The soil is heated to volatilize the associated hydrocarbons according to the concentration of contaminant in the soil and other factors.
The soil is passed through the rotating desorption unit, while hydrocarbons and dust particulates are removed from the soil and transfered to the baghouse.
Baghouse
The baghouse filters the dust particulates from the gaseous hydrocarbon stream into the quench. The contaminated elements are transferred as a gas stream into the oxidizer.
Quench
The now clean soil is rapidly cooled and rehydrated in the quench station. The cooled material is deposited in discrete piles to await analytical testing.
Oxidizer
The oxidizer destroys the contaminants within the gas stream from the baghouse with a destruction removal efficiency (DRE) capable of 99.99% depending on the contaminant concentrations.
Testing
The treated soil is kept in discrete daily batches that are each tested by independent labs to confirm the remediation process has met the criteria for success. Only after a successful test is the soil able to proceed to the final phase of the process.
Reclamation
The clean soil is now backfilled into the environment. Along with the treated soil, the remediation process results in clean offgas. As constituents are oxidized, there are no toxic compounds released into the atmosphere.
